Ground-up geometry work doesn't change by club category so much as the ground itself does — a driver never touches turf, a fairway wood has to earn its living off both a tee and the deck, and a wedge lives closer to the dirt than anything else you carry. What follows is the geometry work for each category, kept on this one page so the whole bag reads as one job instead of six separate tickets.

A driver is the one club in the bag most golfers own for reasons that have nothing to do with how it sits behind the ball. We start there instead.
Address geometry decides the miss before you move
Sole a driver on the mat and step behind it. Modern heads are deep and low, which means small differences in how the sole rests translate into visible differences in where the face looks. A head that sits open makes a player close it; a head that sits shut makes a player hold it off. Neither compensation is wrong exactly, but both cost consistency, and both are invisible on a launch monitor readout that only shows you the result.
The first twenty minutes of this session are spent with the club still. We check how the sole rests on the turf you actually tee off from, where the shaft plane sits relative to your hands, and whether the face you think you are aiming is the face the head is presenting. Then we adjust hosel settings, or swap heads, until what you see matches what the club is doing.
Length is the second lever, and the least popular one
Stock driver length has crept out to forty-five and a half inches and beyond. That number was chosen to sell distance in a demo bay, not to help a golfer find the centre of the face on the fourteenth tee. When we shorten a driver, ball speed potential drops fractionally and strike quality usually improves by more than enough to cover it — but only if the head weight is corrected at the same time so the club does not go dead in the hands.
That correction is the part most shops skip. Cutting an inch off a driver drops roughly six swingweight points. Put back through a heavier grip, a backweight, or lead in the head, the feel is preserved. Left alone, the club feels like a stick and the golfer swings harder to compensate.
We will not shorten a driver without rebalancing it. If the session runs out of time before the weighting is settled, you come back and finish it at no additional charge.
Then, and only then, the numbers
With geometry fixed, shaft trials become meaningful. We hold length, lie and head constant and change one shaft at a time, watching spin loft, dispersion pattern and how repeatable your strike location is on face tape. At 4,200 feet the raw carry figures on any monitor read generously, so we care far more about the tightness of the pattern than the headline number.
Attack angle gets attention too, since it interacts directly with tee height and with how the sole wants to sit. Many players here are fighting a downward strike with a low-spin head that punishes it, which is a geometry problem dressed up as a spin problem.

Off a tee, most fairway woods are fine. Off dry August turf on a benchland course, the sole shape is doing almost all the work.
The club that gets fitted least and used hardest
Golfers will spend two hours choosing a driver and then buy a three wood because it matched the set. That would be defensible if the two clubs did the same job, but they do not. A driver meets the ball on a tee with the sole clear of the ground. A fairway wood has to survive contact with whatever the turf is doing that week, and along the Wasatch Front the turf changes character three times a season.
So this bench spends its time on the underside of the club. Sole width, camber front to back, camber heel to toe, leading edge height and how much of the sole actually touches down at your delivery. We use sole tape here the same way we use it on irons, because a wood that digs is not a confidence problem, it is a geometry problem.
Leading edge height and the top-half strike
Players who thin fairway woods are usually not lifting up. More often the leading edge sits high enough at address that finding the bottom groove requires a swing that bottoms out perfectly, and nobody does that every time. Lowering the effective leading edge — through head choice, through a slightly shorter build, or through a shaft that delivers less toe-down — makes the same swing produce a better strike.
Half the fairway wood sessions we run end with a five wood replacing a three wood. It is not a downgrade. It is the club actually being usable from the ground.
Length, and why stock is long here too
Stock three woods run around forty-three inches. For a lot of players that is half an inch more than they can control off a fairway lie, and the loss in ball speed from shortening is small compared to what a centred strike returns. We test both and let the tape decide. As with the driver, any length change gets rebalanced before you leave.
Where this club sits in your set
Fairway woods only earn a slot if the yardage they produce is not already covered. At altitude, gaps compress at the top of the bag — a three wood and a driver can end up thirteen yards apart on a warm day, which is not worth a slot. Part of this session is a frank conversation about whether you need two fairway woods, one, or none, and whether a hybrid covers the gap better. That conversation continues on the hybrid bench.

Everyone has a rung on the ladder where the long irons stop paying rent. This session finds yours and builds the club that takes over.
The crossover is personal, not a rule
There is no universal club number where irons become hybrids. We have fitted a strong player whose crossover sat at the three iron and a slower-swinging retiree whose crossover sat at the six. What determines it is not swing speed alone but how much height you can generate at that head mass, and whether the ball still stops when it lands.
So the test here is a stopping test, not a distance test. We look at descent behaviour and at how wide the dispersion goes when the strike drifts a groove low. The rung where the iron stops holding a green is the rung where the hybrid earns the slot — even if the iron still carries further on a pure strike.
Hybrids need geometry too, and rarely get it
Because hybrids arrive as a single stock spec, most players never have theirs checked. Yet a hybrid has a sole that interacts with turf, a lie angle that sets the face direction, and a length that determines your posture — all the same considerations we apply to an iron. A stock hybrid that sits two degrees upright will send a good swing left, and the player will assume they are simply bad with hybrids.
If you own a hybrid you have never trusted, bring it. Roughly a third of the time it is not the wrong club, it is the right club sitting at the wrong angle.
Matching the replacement to the neighbours
A hybrid that flies eleven yards further than the iron above it has not fixed a gap, it has moved one. Once we know which rung is changing, the build gets set so the new club slots between its neighbours by carry, not by loft on the sole. At Salt Lake altitude those two things separate more than they do lower down, so we work from measured carry every time.
The shaft question
Hybrids are often sold with a shaft closer to a fairway wood than to the irons around them. That is fine if the club is being used as a small fairway wood off the deck; it is a problem if you want it to feel like the six iron you just hit. We build both ways depending on which job you want the club to do, and the choice is made deliberately rather than inherited from a stock offering.

This is the session the shop is named for. Two hours, a board, a roll of sole tape, and the whole set walked through one club at a time.
Why the whole set, and not just the seven iron
Almost every fitting you can book elsewhere resolves lie angle from one club and then applies a blanket adjustment to the rest. That works if the set progresses cleanly, and sets rarely do. Shaft length changes by half an inch per club, which changes how upright you stand; head mass changes; offset changes; and in blended sets the long clubs may come from an entirely different chassis than the short ones. The result is a bag where the pitching wedge is dead straight and the five iron leaks right, or the reverse.
We tape and strike every iron in the set. It takes longer and it is the reason this session runs two hours instead of one. What comes out is a per-club lie spec rather than a single number, and typically it is not flat across the set — there is usually a half degree of progression somewhere.
Reading sole tape honestly
A sole tape mark tells you where the club met the ground, not where the club was pointed. Those are different questions and confusing them is how players end up bent the wrong direction. A toe-side mark on a shot struck fat, for instance, is a strike quality artefact, not a lie problem. We throw out the fat ones, throw out the thin ones, and read what is left.
Six clean strikes per club is the minimum before we call a number. On a bad ball-striking day that can mean twelve or fifteen swings on some irons, and we would rather run over on time than bend a set off three data points.
About one set in six needs no change at all. When that is the answer, you pay for the session, get the sheet, and keep your clubs. That is a legitimate outcome, not a failed fitting.
Length before lie, always
Lie angle and length are coupled: lengthen a club and the effective lie goes more upright, shorten it and the toe drops. Fitting lie first and then changing length undoes the work. So we settle length against your wrist-to-floor measurement and your address posture, extend or shorten if needed, and only then read the board.
This ordering matters most for players outside the middle of the height distribution, which in practice means most juniors, most women fitted from a stock set, and a lot of taller men who were sold standard length because it was on the shelf.
Bending happens here
The loft and lie machine is in the back of the shop, not at a regional service centre. Forged heads bend readily; cast heads bend within a narrower window and we will tell you honestly if yours is at its limit. Either way you are not waiting three weeks for clubs to come back from somewhere else.

The number stamped on the sole is a starting point. What matters is the bounce the club presents at your delivery, on the ground you actually play.
Stamped bounce and effective bounce are not the same number
Bounce is measured with the club soled square and level. Nobody plays a wedge that way. Open the face and effective bounce rises sharply; lean the shaft forward and it collapses. A player who habitually delofts a wedge at impact can turn a 12-degree sole into something behaving like a 6, and then wonders why the club digs on firm ground.
So the session starts by measuring what you do, not what the club says. Shaft lean at impact, angle of attack into the ball, and how much the face opens on a standard pitch. Those three behaviours plus the firmness of your home turf determine the grind that will work.
Utah turf runs firm, and grinds should follow
From late June the valley courses bake. Heel and toe relief becomes valuable because it lets a player open the face without the leading edge climbing away from the ball. Wide, full soles with little relief are excellent in soft sand and poor on hardpan lies, and we see a lot of wedges here that were bought for conditions eight hundred miles away.
The bunkers are a separate question. Sand along the Wasatch Front is frequently coarse and shallow over a hard base, which rewards less bounce than the standard advice suggests. We ask which courses you play before recommending a sand wedge grind.
Bring your current wedges even if they are worn out. A worn leading edge and a polished bounce surface tell us exactly how you deliver the club — they are a free record of your last two seasons.
Gapping below the pitching wedge
Modern iron sets have strengthened lofts to the point where a pitching wedge can be a 43-degree club. Left unaddressed, that leaves a chasm before the sand wedge. We measure carry for each wedge rather than assuming four-degree spacing works, and at altitude the spacing that produces even yardage steps is often uneven in loft.
Lie and length still apply
Wedges get bent and shortened as often as irons, and they are the clubs most likely to have drifted, because they hit the hardest ground most often. Every wedge in the session goes on the board with tape, same as the iron bench. A sand wedge that sits upright sends full shots left, and that is a surprisingly common cause of the short-iron pull.

Wear your normal golf shoes. Wedge delivery changes measurably between street shoes and spikes, and that difference is not academic.

Groove life
We check groove edge condition on every wedge. A sand wedge with two full seasons on firm turf has usually lost enough edge to change spin, and no fitting fixes that.

A putter that rests on its toe aims right of where you set it. Sixty minutes is enough to remove that error permanently.
The most measurable club in the bag, and the least measured
Putting is the one place where the swing is slow enough that geometry dominates completely. There is no compensating mid-stroke, no timing to save a misaligned face. Whatever the club is pointed at when it arrives is where the ball starts. That makes a putter the easiest club in the bag to fit properly and the one most often bought purely on how the head looks at address.
The core problem is nearly always length. Off-the-rack putters are commonly thirty-four inches because that is a convenient number for a rack, and a large share of golfers need thirty-three or less. Too long, and the hands sit too far from the body, the eyes end up inside the ball, and the toe lifts off the ground. The player then aims right, senses it, and pulls to compensate.
Eye line before anything else
We use a mirror and a laser to establish where your eyes actually sit relative to the ball in your natural posture — not the posture you adopt when someone is watching. Directly over the ball, slightly inside, and slightly outside all produce different aim biases, and they interact with head shape. A player whose eyes sit well inside the line generally aims better with a face-balanced mallet and worse with a blade, and vice versa.
Nine putter sessions out of ten end with a length change. Six of those ten also end with a lie adjustment. Head swaps are the exception, not the rule.
Lie angle, shaft lean and where the sole sits
Once eye line and length are set, the sole should rest flat at your natural hand height. We check this with tape on the sole and a strike board, the same method used on the iron bench. Putter lie is adjustable within a workable range on most heads, and we do that here rather than sending the club out.
Shaft lean is the last piece. Forward lean delofts the putter, and most putters carry three to four degrees of loft specifically to lift the ball out of its resting depression on the green. A player with heavy forward lean can effectively remove all of it, which produces a putt that hops before it rolls. More loft on the head, or less lean, fixes it.
Green speed matters more than people expect
Head mass should be matched to the greens you play most. Salt Lake municipal greens in midsummer run considerably quicker than the same greens in April, and a heavy head that feels controlled on slow surfaces can feel unmanageable on fast ones. We keep counterweights and sole weights on hand and adjust mass rather than telling you to buy a second putter.

Toe hang and stroke arc
We measure your arc rather than guessing it from a video. Matching hang to arc helps, but only after length and eye line are correct — get those wrong and the arc you measure is not the one you would naturally make.
